Alexander Krichel is a German classical pianist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and insightful interpretations of classical repertoire. Born on June 29, 1989, in Hamburg, Germany, Krichel showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He received his first piano lessons from his mother, who was a music teacher, and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Krichel's musical education continued at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, where he studied with pianist and pedagogue Vladimir Krainev. Krainev recognized Krichel's exceptional talent and encouraged him to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Krichel went on to study with renowned pianists such as Dmitri Bashkirov, Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, and András Schiff, further honing his skills and developing his unique musical voice. Krichel made his debut as a soloist with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major. This early success paved the way for a career as a concert pianist, and Krichel has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Krichel's most notable performances was his debut at the BBC Proms in 2011, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was widely praised for Krichel's sensitive and nuanced interpretation of the concerto, and cemented his reputation as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation. Krichel has also won numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2008, he won the German Music Competition, which led to a series of high-profile performances and recording opportunities. He was also a finalist in the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2011, where he was praised for his "brilliant technique and deep musicality." In addition to his performances as a soloist, Krichel is also an avid chamber musician and collaborates regularly with other musicians. He has performed with renowned artists such as cellist Daniel Müller-Schott, violinist Julia Fischer, and clarinetist Sabine Meyer, among others. Krichel's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, among others. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Robert Schumann, and has recorded several albums of Schumann's piano music, including "Schumann" (2011), "Schumann: Carnaval" (2014), and "Schumann: Dichterliebe" (2017). Krichel's recordings have received critical acclaim and have been praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. His recording of Schumann's "Carnaval" was named "Editor's Choice" by Gramophone magazine, and his recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations was described by The Guardian as "a performance of great clarity and poise." In addition to his performing career, Krichel is also committed to music education and outreach. He has given masterclasses and workshops for young musicians around the world, and is a regular guest lecturer at universities and conservatories. He is also a passionate advocate for contemporary music and has premiered several works by living composers.
