The San Francisco Opera Orchestra is a world-renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences for over 90 years. Founded in 1923, the orchestra has become an integral part of the San Francisco Opera, providing the musical backdrop for some of the most iconic operas in history. The orchestra was founded by Gaetano Merola, an Italian conductor who had previously worked with the Chicago Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Merola was brought to San Francisco to establish a new opera company, and he quickly set about assembling a world-class orchestra to accompany the singers on stage. The early years of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra were marked by a series of groundbreaking performances. In 1924, the orchestra performed the world premiere of Puccini's "Turandot," which was a huge success and helped establish the company's reputation as a major player in the world of opera. Over the years, the San Francisco Opera Orchestra has been led by some of the most talented conductors in the world, including Kurt Herbert Adler, who served as the company's general director from 1953 to 1981. Under Adler's leadership, the orchestra continued to grow in stature, and it became known for its innovative productions and high-quality performances. One of the highlights of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra's history came in 1983, when it performed the world premiere of John Adams' "Nixon in China." The opera, which tells the story of President Richard Nixon's historic visit to China in 1972, was a critical and commercial success, and it helped establish Adams as one of the most important composers of his generation. In addition to its work with the San Francisco Opera, the orchestra has also performed with a number of other prestigious organizations, including the San Francisco Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It has also toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, earning rave reviews for its performances in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls. The San Francisco Opera Orchestra is made up of some of the most talented musicians in the world, many of whom have been with the company for decades. Among the orchestra's most notable members are concertmaster Kay Stern, principal cellist Emil Miland, and principal bassoonist Stephen Paulson. Over the years, the San Francisco Opera Orchestra has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. In 2015, it was named "Best Opera Orchestra" by the San Francisco Classical Voice, and it has been nominated for several Grammy Awards for its recordings of operas by composers such as Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner. Despite its many accomplishments, the San Francisco Opera Orchestra remains committed to its mission of bringing the beauty and power of classical music to audiences around the world. Whether performing in the grand opera houses of Europe or in small community theaters in rural America, the orchestra continues to inspire and delight audiences with its unparalleled artistry and passion for music.
