Period:ClassicalRomanticGenre:ChamberJacob Lateiner was a renowned classical pianist and educator who was born on August 23, 1928, in Havana, Cuba. He was the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants who had fled to Cuba to escape the pogroms in their homeland. Lateiner's parents were both musicians, and they recognized their son's musical talent at an early age. They began teaching him piano when he was just four years old. Lateiner's family moved to the United States when he was eight years old, settling in New York City. He continued his piano studies with his parents and later with Rosina Lhévinne, a renowned piano teacher at the Juilliard School. Lateiner made his debut as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic at the age of 15, playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. Lateiner's career as a concert pianist took off in the 1950s and 1960s. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also gave recitals in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Festival Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Lateiner was known for his interpretations of the music of Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. He was particularly admired for his performances of Beethoven's late piano sonatas, which he recorded for Columbia Records in the 1960s. His recordings of Schubert's piano music were also highly regarded. In addition to his career as a performer, Lateiner was a respected educator. He taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the New England Conservatory of Music. He was known for his rigorous teaching style and his ability to inspire his students to achieve their full potential. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as performers and teachers. Lateiner received many honors and awards throughout his career. He was a recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton in 1994. Lateiner continued to perform and teach well into his later years. He died on December 12, 2010, at the age of 82. His legacy as a performer and educator continues to inspire generations of musicians.More....
