Evelyn Rothwell was a renowned classical music artist who made a significant contribution to the world of music as an oboist. She was born on 27th December 1911 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. Her father was a music teacher, and her mother was a pianist. Evelyn showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. However, she later switched to the oboe, which became her primary instrument. Evelyn received her early education at the Blackburn High School for Girls. She then went on to study at the Royal Manchester College of Music, where she was a student of Leon Goossens, a renowned oboist. She graduated with a diploma in oboe performance in 1932. After completing her studies, Evelyn began her career as a freelance musician, playing with various orchestras and ensembles. In 1936, Evelyn joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra as the principal oboist, a position she held for over 30 years. During her time with the orchestra, she performed in numerous concerts and recordings, including the premiere of Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" in 1962. She also played under the baton of some of the most prominent conductors of the time, including Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Malcolm Sargent, and Sir John Barbirolli. Apart from her work with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Evelyn was also a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. She performed with various ensembles, including the London Wind Quintet, the Melos Ensemble, and the Allegri String Quartet. She also gave solo recitals and made several recordings, including a highly acclaimed recording of Bach's oboe concertos. Evelyn's talent and dedication to music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1957, she was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for her services to music. She was also made a Fellow of the Royal College of Music in 1965 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1972. Evelyn retired from the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1969 but continued to perform and teach. She was a professor of oboe at the Royal College of Music from 1971 to 1976 and also taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She was known for her dedication to teaching and was highly respected by her students. Evelyn Rothwell passed away on 5th March 2008 at the age of 96. She left behind a legacy as one of the most accomplished oboists of her time. Her contributions to the world of music were significant, and her influence on the development of the oboe as a solo instrument was profound. Her recordings and performances continue to inspire and delight music lovers around the world.
