The Eybler Quartet is a Canadian classical music ensemble that specializes in performing music from the Classical and early Romantic periods. The quartet was founded in 2004 by four musicians who shared a passion for historically informed performance and a desire to explore lesser-known works from the 18th and 19th centuries. The founding members of the Eybler Quartet were Aisslinn Nosky (violin), Julia Wedman (violin), Patrick Jordan (viola), and Margaret Gay (cello). All four musicians had extensive experience performing with other ensembles, including the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra. The quartet takes its name from Joseph Leopold Edler von Eybler, an Austrian composer and contemporary of Mozart who wrote several string quartets. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by Eybler, as well as other composers of the Classical and early Romantic periods, such as Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert. One of the Eybler Quartet's main goals is to bring attention to lesser-known works from the Classical and early Romantic periods. The quartet has performed several world premieres of works by composers such as Franz Asplmayr and Franz Krommer, as well as lesser-known works by more well-known composers such as Haydn and Beethoven. The Eybler Quartet has performed at several major music festivals and concert series in Canada and the United States, including the Ottawa Chamberfest, the Boston Early Music Festival, and the Music at Menlo festival in California. The quartet has also toured internationally, performing in Europe and Asia. In addition to their live performances, the Eybler Quartet has released several recordings, including a CD of Haydn's Op. 33 quartets and a CD of works by Eybler and Asplmayr. The quartet's recordings have received critical acclaim, with reviewers praising their "impeccable musicianship" and "sensitive and nuanced" interpretations. The Eybler Quartet has received several awards and honors for their performances and recordings. In 2010, the quartet was awarded the prestigious Virginia Parker Prize by the Canada Council for the Arts, which recognizes outstanding young Canadian musicians. The quartet was also nominated for a Juno Award in 2012 for their recording of Haydn's Op. 33 quartets. Despite changes in personnel over the years, the Eybler Quartet has remained committed to their mission of exploring lesser-known works from the Classical and early Romantic periods. The quartet continues to perform and record, and their unique approach to historically informed performance has earned them a loyal following among classical music enthusiasts.
