He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known violinist. Khaikin showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at a young age. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where he was a student of the famous pianist and composer Alexander Goldenweiser. After completing his studies, Khaikin began his career as a pianist, performing in concerts throughout Russia and Europe. However, he soon realized that his true passion was conducting, and he began to focus on this aspect of his career. He became an assistant conductor at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he worked under the guidance of the legendary conductor Nikolai Golovanov. Khaikin's talent as a conductor quickly became apparent, and he was soon invited to conduct orchestras throughout Russia and Europe. He made his debut with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in 1941, and he quickly became one of the orchestra's most popular conductors. Khaikin was also known for his interpretations of the music of Sergei Prokofiev. He conducted the premiere of Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in 1945, and he went on to conduct many of Prokofiev's other works throughout his career. In addition to his work as a conductor, Khaikin was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Moscow Conservatory and the Leningrad Conservatory, and many of his students went on to become successful conductors and musicians in their own right.
