The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The choir has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1847, and has since become one of the most respected and beloved choral groups in the world. The choir was originally formed as a way to bring together the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who had settled in the Salt Lake Valley. The group was initially called the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and performed primarily at church services and events. However, as the choir's reputation grew, they began to perform at secular events as well, including the inauguration of President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965. Over the years, the choir has undergone several name changes, including the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, which was adopted in 2018. The choir is now made up of over 360 volunteer singers, who come from all walks of life and range in age from 25 to 60. One of the choir's most notable achievements is their weekly radio program, Music and the Spoken Word, which has been on the air since 1929. The program features a mix of choral music and inspirational messages, and is broadcast live from the Tabernacle on Temple Square every Sunday morning. Music and the Spoken Word is now the longest-running continuous network broadcast in the world, and has been heard by millions of people around the globe. In addition to their radio program, the choir has also released numerous albums over the years, including several that have won Grammy Awards. Their 2006 album, Spirit of the Season, won the Grammy for Best Traditional Gospel Album, while their 2012 album, Home for the Holidays, won the Grammy for Best Classical Crossover Album. The choir has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Sydney Opera House. They have collaborated with a wide range of artists, from classical musicians like Yo-Yo Ma and Renee Fleming, to pop stars like James Taylor and David Archuleta. One of the choir's most memorable performances was at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The choir performed at the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as at several medal ceremonies throughout the games. Their performance of the national anthem at the opening ceremony was particularly moving, and was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. Another highlight of the choir's history was their performance at the funeral of President Ronald Reagan in 2004. The choir sang several hymns and patriotic songs, including "America the Beautiful" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," and their performance was widely regarded as one of the most moving moments of the ceremony. Despite their many achievements, the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square remains committed to their mission of spreading joy and inspiration through music. They continue to perform regularly at the Tabernacle on Temple Square, as well as at other venues around the world. Their dedication to their craft and their commitment to uplifting others through music have made them one of the most beloved classical music ensembles in the world.
