CanadaGenre:ChamberVocalRoman Borys is a renowned cellist and founding member of the Gryphon Trio, a Canadian classical music ensemble. Born in 1961 in Ottawa, Canada, Borys began playing the cello at the age of four. He studied at the University of Toronto and the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees, respectively. Borys has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many renowned musicians, such as pianist Anton Kuerti and violinist James Ehnes. In addition to his solo work, Borys is a founding member of the Gryphon Trio, which was formed in 1993. The trio, which also includes pianist Jamie Parker and violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon, has won numerous awards and accolades, including two Juno Awards for Classical Album of the Year and the prestigious Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts. The Gryphon Trio has performed at major venues and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland. They have also commissioned and premiered many new works by Canadian composers, including R. Murray Schafer and Christos Hatzis. Borys is also a passionate advocate for music education and outreach. He has served as the Artistic Director of the Ottawa Chamber Music Society and the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, and has taught at the University of Toronto and the Glenn Gould School. He is currently the Director of the Chamber Music Program at the University of Ottawa. Throughout his career, Borys has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 2005, he was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors, for his contributions to Canadian music. He has also been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Canada Council for the Arts' Virginia Parker Prize. Borys continues to perform and record with the Gryphon Trio, as well as pursue his solo career and teaching. His dedication to music education and outreach, as well as his commitment to promoting Canadian music and musicians, has made him a beloved figure in the classical music world.More....
