Nick Drake was a British singer-songwriter and composer who is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Born on June 19, 1948, in Rangoon, Burma, Drake grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at an early age. His parents were both musicians, and his father was a successful composer and arranger. Drake's family moved to England when he was five years old, and he attended Marlborough College, where he excelled in music and played in the school orchestra. After graduating, he enrolled at the University of Cambridge to study English literature, but he soon dropped out to pursue a career in music. In 1967, Drake signed a recording contract with Island Records and released his debut album, "Five Leaves Left," the following year. The album was a critical success but failed to achieve commercial success. Drake's music was characterized by his introspective lyrics, intricate guitar work, and haunting melodies. Drake's second album, "Bryter Layter," was released in 1970 and featured a more upbeat sound than his debut. The album was produced by Joe Boyd and featured guest appearances by musicians such as Richard Thompson and John Cale. Despite receiving positive reviews, the album failed to sell well, and Drake became increasingly disillusioned with the music industry. Drake's third and final album, "Pink Moon," was released in 1972 and featured just Drake's voice and guitar. The album was recorded in just two nights and is widely regarded as his masterpiece. The album's stark, minimalist sound and bleak lyrics reflected Drake's deteriorating mental health, and the album received little attention upon its release. Drake's music was largely ignored during his lifetime, and he struggled with depression and drug addiction. He died on November 25, 1974, at the age of 26, from an overdose of antidepressants. His death was ruled a suicide, although some have speculated that it was accidental. Despite his short career and limited commercial success, Drake's music has had a profound influence on subsequent generations of musicians. His introspective lyrics, intricate guitar work, and haunting melodies have been cited as an influence by artists such as Radiohead, Beck, and Belle and Sebastian. In recent years, Drake's music has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, and his albums have been reissued and remastered. In 2000, he was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans.
