In 1991, Malan was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Pretoria, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree with distinction. She has also performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. One of Malan's most notable achievements was her recording of the complete solo piano works of Sergei Rachmaninoff. The recording, which was released in 2007, received critical acclaim and established Malan as one of the foremost interpreters of Rachmaninoff's music. She has also recorded works by other composers, including Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Schumann. In addition to her performing career, Malan is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught at a number of universities and conservatories, including the University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.
