The Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir, also known as the Copenhagen Boys' Choir, is a world-renowned classical music ensemble that has been enchanting audiences with their angelic voices for over 90 years. The choir was founded in 1924 by Mogens Wöldike, a Danish conductor and composer, and has since become one of the most respected and celebrated choirs in the world. The choir's roots can be traced back to the Royal Danish Chapel, which was established in 1448 by King Christian I. The chapel was originally made up of adult singers, but in the early 20th century, the idea of a boys' choir was introduced. Mogens Wöldike was appointed as the first conductor of the Copenhagen Boys' Choir, and under his leadership, the choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence. Over the years, the choir has performed in some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. They have also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras, including Leonard Bernstein, Sir Simon Rattle, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the highlights of the choir's history was their performance at the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark in 2004. The choir sang a beautiful rendition of "You Raise Me Up" during the ceremony, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout their history. In 1955, they were awarded the prestigious Grand Prix du Disque for their recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. They have also been awarded the Danish Music Award for Best Classical Album multiple times, most recently in 2019 for their album "Christmas with the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir." Despite their many accomplishments, the choir remains committed to their mission of preserving and promoting the rich tradition of choral music. They continue to perform regularly in Denmark and around the world, and their recordings are cherished by classical music lovers everywhere. In addition to their performances, the choir also plays an important role in the cultural life of Denmark. They perform at official state events, including the opening of the Danish Parliament, and they also participate in charitable events and fundraisers. The Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir is made up of approximately 50 boys between the ages of 9 and 14, as well as a small group of adult singers. The boys are selected through a rigorous audition process and receive extensive training in vocal technique, music theory, and performance skills. The choir's repertoire includes a wide range of classical music, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works. They are particularly known for their performances of the music of J.S. Bach, and have recorded several of his major choral works, including the St. Matthew Passion, the Mass in B Minor, and the Christmas Oratorio. In recent years, the choir has also expanded their repertoire to include more contemporary music, including arrangements of popular songs and film music. They have collaborated with artists such as Sting and Elvis Costello, and have performed at major music festivals such as Roskilde Festival and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
