In 1970, Lauer made his debut as a soloist with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. The performance was a resounding success, and Lauer quickly established himself as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation. Over the next few years, Lauer performed extensively throughout Europe, earning critical acclaim for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring new life to classical works. He was particularly noted for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, which he approached with a fresh and innovative perspective. In 1975, Lauer was invited to perform at the prestigious Salzburg Festival, where he gave a stunning performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21.
