John Mills was born on January 1, 1950, in London, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional violinist and his mother a pianist. Mills started playing the guitar at the age of seven and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. At the age of 11, Mills began studying with the renowned classical guitarist, John Williams. Under Williams' tutelage, Mills developed a deep love and appreciation for classical guitar music. He continued his studies with Williams for several years, eventually becoming one of his most accomplished students. In 1968, Mills won first prize in the prestigious International Guitar Competition in Paris, France. This victory launched his career as a professional classical guitarist. Mills went on to perform in some of the world's most renowned concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Throughout his career, Mills has been recognized for his exceptional talent and artistry. He has won numerous awards and accolades, including the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1994 for his contributions to classical music. Mills has also been awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Surrey and the University of Huddersfield.
