Artist Info
L'Achéron is a classical music ensemble that specializes in early music, particularly from the Baroque era. The ensemble was founded in 2009 by François Joubert-Caillet, a French musician who plays the viola da gamba, a stringed instrument that was popular in the Baroque period. Joubert-Caillet had previously played with other early music ensembles, including Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien and Le Poème Harmonique, before deciding to form his own group. The name "L'Achéron" comes from Greek mythology, where the river Acheron was believed to be the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead. Joubert-Caillet chose the name to reflect the ensemble's focus on music from the past, which he sees as a way of connecting with the spirits of those who came before us. The ensemble's core members include François Joubert-Caillet on viola da gamba, Mariana Flores on soprano vocals, and Eduardo Egüez on theorbo, a type of lute. Other musicians are brought in as needed for specific performances, but these three are the mainstays of the group. L'Achéron has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, the Festival de Sablé in France, and the Boston Early Music Festival in the United States. The ensemble has also released several recordings, including "Leçons de Ténèbres" in 2012, which features music by François Couperin, and "La Bella Noeva" in 2016, which explores the music of the Italian Renaissance. One of the highlights of L'Achéron's career was their performance at the 2014 Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, where they presented a program of music by the French composer Marin Marais. The performance was praised by critics for its "subtle and nuanced playing" and "impeccable ensemble work." The ensemble was also awarded the prestigious "Diapason d'Or" award for their recording of Marais' music in 2015. Another notable performance by L'Achéron was their 2017 concert at the Festival de Sablé, where they presented a program of music by the Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi. The concert featured Mariana Flores' "dazzling" soprano vocals and Joubert-Caillet's "sensitive and expressive" playing on the viola da gamba. The ensemble received a standing ovation from the audience and was praised by critics for their "passionate and engaging" performance. In addition to their performances and recordings, L'Achéron is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and they have collaborated with schools and community organizations to bring early music to a wider audience. Joubert-Caillet sees this as an important part of the ensemble's mission, saying that "we want to share our love of this music with as many people as possible, and to inspire the next generation of musicians to explore this rich and fascinating repertoire." Overall, L'Achéron is a highly respected and accomplished ensemble in the world of early music. Their commitment to historical accuracy and their passion for the music of the past have earned them a devoted following and numerous accolades. As they continue to explore the rich and varied repertoire of early music, it is clear that L'Achéron will remain a vital and important presence in the world of classical music for years to come.More....
