United States of AmericaBirth:August 26, 1960 in Breaux Bridge, LAGenre:KeyboardBranford Marsalis is a renowned American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on August 26, 1960, in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, Marsalis grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Ellis Marsalis, was a jazz pianist and educator, and his brothers, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason, are also accomplished musicians. Marsalis began playing the clarinet at the age of 12 and later switched to the saxophone. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied with saxophonist and educator Joe Viola. After leaving Berklee, Marsalis moved to New York City, where he quickly established himself as a talented and versatile musician. In 1980, Marsalis joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, a legendary jazz ensemble that had launched the careers of many great musicians. Marsalis played with the Jazz Messengers for two years before leaving to pursue a solo career. He released his first album, Scenes in the City, in 1984, which was well-received by critics and established him as a rising star in the jazz world. Marsalis continued to release albums throughout the 1980s, including Royal Garden Blues (1986), Renaissance (1987), and Trio Jeepy (1989). He also collaborated with other musicians, including Sting, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock. In 1991, Marsalis formed the Branford Marsalis Quartet, which included pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts. The quartet has released numerous albums and has become one of the most respected and influential jazz ensembles of the past few decades. In addition to his work in jazz, Marsalis has also made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with classical musicians such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Emanuel Ax. One of Marsalis's most notable performances in the classical world was his appearance as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic in 1994. He performed the world premiere of John Adams's Saxophone Concerto, which was written specifically for him. The performance was a critical and commercial success and helped to establish Marsalis as a major figure in the classical music world. Marsalis has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He has won three Grammy Awards, including Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group, for his album Contemporary Jazz in 2000. He has also been awarded an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music and has been inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. In addition to his work as a musician, Marsalis is also an educator and advocate for the arts. He has served as a visiting professor at Michigan State University and has taught master classes at universities and music schools around the world. He has also been a vocal advocate for music education and has worked to promote the importance of the arts in schools and communities. In conclusion, Branford Marsalis is a highly accomplished and influential musician who has made significant contributions to both the jazz and classical music worlds.More....
