Artist Info
Birth:1967 in Osaka, JapanGenre:ConcertoKeyboardMari Kodama is a renowned classical pianist who has captivated audiences around the world with her virtuosic performances and deep musicality. Born in Osaka, Japan in 1967, Kodama began playing the piano at the age of three and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Her parents, both amateur musicians, recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Kodama's early musical education was shaped by her studies with the renowned Japanese pianist and pedagogue, Kazuko Yasukawa. Under Yasukawa's guidance, Kodama developed a strong technical foundation and a deep understanding of the classical repertoire. She also began to perform in public at a young age, winning several competitions and earning critical acclaim for her performances. In 1984, Kodama moved to Europe to continue her studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, Germany. There, she studied with the legendary pianist and teacher, Tatiana Nikolayeva, who had a profound influence on her musical development. Nikolayeva was known for her rigorous approach to technique and interpretation, and Kodama credits her with helping her to refine her playing and develop a more nuanced understanding of the music she was performing. Kodama's career as a professional pianist began to take off in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when she won several major international competitions, including the International Beethoven Competition in Vienna and the International ARD Music Competition in Munich. These victories brought her to the attention of audiences and critics around the world, and she quickly established herself as one of the most exciting young pianists of her generation. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Kodama continued to build her reputation as a soloist and chamber musician, performing with some of the world's leading orchestras and collaborating with renowned musicians such as her husband, the conductor Kent Nagano, and her sister, the pianist Momo Kodama. She also recorded extensively, releasing acclaimed recordings of works by Beethoven, Schumann, Debussy, and other composers. One of the highlights of Kodama's career came in 2003, when she performed all 32 of Beethoven's piano sonatas in a series of concerts at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. The marathon performance, which took place over the course of several weeks, was a major undertaking that required immense technical skill and musical sensitivity. Kodama's interpretation of the sonatas was widely praised for its depth and insight, and the performances cemented her reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Beethoven's music. In addition to her work as a performer, Kodama has also been active as a teacher and mentor. She has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, and has mentored numerous young pianists who have gone on to successful careers in music. Kodama's many achievements have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1999, she was awarded the Suntory Music Award, one of the most prestigious awards for classical musicians in Japan. She has also been awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, and in 2014 she was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette by the Japanese government in recognition of her contributions to the arts.More....
