Role:ComposerBirth:1900Death:1960Genre:ChamberConcertoVasa Prihoda was a Czech violinist and composer who was born on August 27, 1900, in the town of Kolin, which is located in the Czech Republic. He was the youngest of six children and was born into a family of musicians. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they both played in the local orchestra. Prihoda began playing the violin at the age of five and showed a natural talent for the instrument. Prihoda's family moved to Prague when he was a child, and he began studying at the Prague Conservatory at the age of ten. He studied under the renowned violinist Otakar Ševčík, who was known for his strict teaching methods. Prihoda was a dedicated student and practiced for hours every day, which helped him to develop his technique and musicality. In 1916, Prihoda made his debut as a soloist with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. He was only sixteen years old at the time, but his performance was well-received by the audience and critics. This marked the beginning of his career as a soloist, and he went on to perform with many other orchestras throughout Europe. Prihoda's playing was characterized by his virtuosity and his ability to convey emotion through his music. He was known for his expressive playing and his ability to connect with his audience. He was also a composer and wrote several pieces for the violin, including a concerto and a sonata. One of Prihoda's most notable performances was his appearance at the Salzburg Festival in 1934. He played the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Bruno Walter. This performance was a great success and helped to establish Prihoda as one of the leading violinists of his time. Prihoda also performed in the United States, where he was well-received by audiences and critics alike. He made his American debut in 1935, playing with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He went on to perform with many other American orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Prihoda was also a chamber musician. He played with many other musicians, including the pianist Artur Schnabel and the cellist Pablo Casals. He was also a teacher and taught at the Prague Conservatory and the Vienna Academy of Music. Prihoda's career was interrupted by World War II, and he was forced to flee Czechoslovakia in 1948 due to the communist regime. He settled in Switzerland and continued to perform and teach. He also recorded many of his performances, which have been preserved and are still available today. Prihoda died on June 28, 1960, in Ascona, Switzerland, at the age of 59. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest violinists of his time. His recordings and compositions continue to be admired by musicians and music lovers around the world.More....
