Vance George is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of choral music. Born on January 2, 1933, in Berkeley, California, Vance George grew up in a family that valued music. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. Vance George's love for music began at an early age, and he started singing in his church choir when he was just six years old. Vance George's musical education began at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. During his time at the conservatory, Vance George studied under the renowned choral conductor, Roger Wagner. After completing his education, Vance George began his career as a choral conductor. He served as the director of the San Francisco Boys Chorus from 1963 to 1996. During his tenure, he transformed the choir into one of the most respected boys' choirs in the world. He also served as the director of the Oakland Symphony Chorus from 1972 to 1996. In addition to his work with the San Francisco Boys Chorus and the Oakland Symphony Chorus, Vance George was also the director of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus from 1983 to 2006. During his time with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, Vance George led the chorus in numerous performances of major works, including Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Mahler's Eighth Symphony, and Orff's Carmina Burana. Vance George's work as a choral conductor has earned him numerous awards and accolades. In 1996, he was awarded the prestigious Robert Shaw Choral Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the choral art. He was also awarded the California Arts Council's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. One of Vance George's most significant achievements as a choral conductor was his work on the soundtrack for the movie Amadeus. Vance George served as the choral director for the movie, which won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The soundtrack for the movie, which featured the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, was also a critical and commercial success. Vance George's contributions to the world of choral music have been significant, and his legacy continues to inspire musicians and music lovers around the world.
