He was the youngest of six children born to a family of musicians. His father, Juan Sanroma, was a violinist, and his mother, Maria de la Cruz, was a pianist. Sanroma's parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Sanroma began his piano studies at the age of six with his mother, who was his first teacher. He later studied with other prominent pianists, including Frank La Forge and Ernest Hutcheson. Sanroma's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. He made his debut at the age of nine, performing with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. In 1915, Sanroma's family moved to New York City, where he continued his studies at the Institute of Musical Art (now known as the Juilliard School). He studied with renowned pianist and pedagogue Ernest Hutcheson, who recognized Sanroma's exceptional talent and helped him develop his technique and musicality. Sanroma's career as a concert pianist began in the 1920s, when he made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation, and he performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Sanroma was known for his virtuosic technique, his expressive playing, and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. Sanroma's repertoire was vast and included works by many of the great composers of the classical and romantic periods, including Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Spanish and Latin American composers, including Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albeniz, and Heitor Villa-Lobos. Sanroma's career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the United States Army. After the war, he resumed his concert career and continued to perform until the 1960s. He also taught at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, where he inspired and mentored many young pianists. Sanroma received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Merit from the government of Spain, the Order of the Liberator from the government of Venezuela, and the Order of the Aztec Eagle from the government of Mexico. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Puerto Rico. Sanroma's recordings are still highly regarded today, and his performances continue to inspire and influence pianists around the world. He died on November 24, 1984, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the age of 82. His legacy as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century lives on, and his contributions to the world of classical music will never be forgotten.More....
