Born on December 22, 1951, in New York City, Lipsey grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Lipsey started playing the drums at the age of six and was soon introduced to the world of classical percussion. Lipsey attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he studied percussion with Saul Goodman, the principal timpanist of the New York Philharmonic. After graduating from high school, Lipsey went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance. In 1974, Lipsey joined the Steve Reich and Musicians ensemble, which was founded by the minimalist composer Steve Reich. Lipsey played percussion in many of Reich's works, including "Drumming," "Music for 18 Musicians," and "Tehillim."
