The Composers Quartet was a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1965 in New York City. The quartet was known for its innovative approach to contemporary classical music and its dedication to performing works by living composers. The founding members of the Composers Quartet were Matthew Raimondi (violin), Anahid Ajemian (violin), Jean Dupouy (viola), and Michael Rudiakov (cello). All four members were accomplished musicians who had previously performed with other ensembles and orchestras. The quartet quickly gained a reputation for its virtuosic performances and its commitment to new music. The group's repertoire included works by contemporary composers such as Elliott Carter, Milton Babbitt, and Charles Wuorinen, as well as pieces by more established composers like Beethoven and Mozart. One of the highlights of the Composers Quartet's early career was its performance at the 1966 Newport Jazz Festival. The quartet was the first classical ensemble to perform at the festival, and its performance was well-received by both the jazz and classical music communities. In 1967, the quartet released its first album, titled "New Music for String Quartet." The album featured works by contemporary composers such as Carter, Babbitt, and Wuorinen, and was praised for its technical precision and musicality. Over the years, the Composers Quartet continued to perform and record new music, collaborating with a wide range of composers and musicians. The quartet also received numerous awards and accolades for its work, including a Grammy nomination for its 1970 album "Music of Charles Ives." In addition to its work as a performing ensemble, the Composers Quartet was also dedicated to music education. The quartet frequently gave masterclasses and workshops, and worked with young musicians to help them develop their skills and understanding of contemporary classical music. Despite its success, the Composers Quartet faced challenges in the 1980s and 1990s. The group struggled to find funding and support for its work, and several members left the ensemble to pursue other opportunities. The quartet disbanded in 1997, after more than 30 years of performing and recording. However, its legacy lives on through its recordings and the many musicians who were inspired by its dedication to new music and innovative approach to classical performance.
