The orchestra was founded in 1944 by conductor Ataúlfo Argenta, who served as its first music director until his untimely death in 1958. Since then, the orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Jesús López Cobos, and Miguel Roa. The Madrid Concert Orchestra is made up of approximately 60 musicians, many of whom are Spanish or have ties to Spain. The ensemble performs a wide range of classical music, from Baroque and Classical-era works to contemporary compositions. The orchestra has a particular focus on Spanish music, and has premiered many works by Spanish composers over the years.
