He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Damgaard showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he received his formal training in music. Damgaard's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. He won his first major competition at the age of 16, when he was awarded first prize in the Danish National Piano Competition. This was the beginning of a long and illustrious career in music, which would see him perform on some of the world's most prestigious stages. Throughout his career, Damgaard was known for his technical proficiency and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann, and his performances of these composers' works were widely regarded as some of the best in the world. One of the highlights of Damgaard's career was his performance at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow in 1962. This was one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world, and Damgaard was one of only a handful of non-Soviet pianists to be invited to compete. Despite the intense competition, Damgaard's performance was widely praised, and he was awarded third prize in the competition. Over the course of his career, Damgaard performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He also performed at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival. In addition to his performances, Damgaard was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music for many years, and his students included some of the most talented young pianists in Denmark. He was known for his rigorous teaching style and his ability to bring out the best in his students. Throughout his career, Damgaard received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1972, he was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog, one of Denmark's highest honors, for his services to music. He was also awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize in 1985, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Danish music. Despite his many achievements, Damgaard remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to perform and teach until his death in 2006, at the age of 71.
