Jean-Paul Gasparian is a French-Armenian classical pianist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and unique interpretations of classical repertoire. Born on December 22, 1989, in Marseille, France, Gasparian showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. His parents, both of Armenian descent, were supportive of his musical pursuits and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Gasparian's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at a young age. He won his first competition at the age of six and went on to win numerous awards and prizes throughout his childhood and teenage years. In 2004, he was awarded the First Prize at the International Piano Competition in San Sebastian, Spain, and in 2005, he won the First Prize at the International Piano Competition in Andorra. Gasparian's musical education began at the Marseille Conservatory, where he studied with renowned pianist and pedagogue Jean-Marc Luisada. He later continued his studies at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied with Michel Beroff and received his diploma with honors. Gasparian also studied with other notable pianists, including Boris Berman, Murray Perahia, and Maria Joao Pires. Gasparian's career as a professional pianist began in earnest in 2010, when he won the First Prize at the International Piano Competition in Porto, Portugal. This victory brought him to the attention of the international music community, and he began to receive invitations to perform at major concert halls and festivals around the world. One of Gasparian's most notable performances took place in 2012, when he performed at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris as part of the "Piano aux Jacobins" festival. His performance of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff was widely praised by critics, who noted his technical skill and emotional depth. Gasparian has also performed with numerous orchestras, including the Orchestre National de Lille, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille, and the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris. In 2014, he performed with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra in Yerevan, Armenia, in a concert that was broadcast live on national television. In addition to his performances as a soloist and with orchestras, Gasparian is also an active chamber musician. He has collaborated with numerous musicians, including violinist Renaud Capuçon and cellist Gautier Capuçon, and has performed at major chamber music festivals around the world. Gasparian's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works by composers from the Baroque era to the present day. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, and has recorded several albums of their works. His recordings have been released on the Mirare and Aparté labels and have received critical acclaim. Gasparian's musical achievements have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2013, he was awarded the "Prix de la Révélation" by the French music magazine Diapason, and in 2015, he was named a "Rising Star" by the European Concert Hall Organization. He has also been awarded the "Prix de la Fondation Simone et Cino Del Duca" and the "Prix de la Fondation Charles Oulmont." Despite his success as a musician, Gasparian remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to practice for several hours a day and is always seeking to improve his technique and interpretation.
