He studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. He then went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he received his Master of Music degree. Phillips' career as a professional musician began in 1982 when he joined the Orion String Quartet as the second violinist. The quartet quickly gained recognition for their exceptional performances and was awarded the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1985. This award helped to launch their career, and they began performing at major concert halls around the world. Over the years, Phillips has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Peter Serkin and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of Phillips' career was his performance at the White House in 1994.
