The Phoenix Symphony is a classical music ensemble based in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in 1947, the orchestra has become one of the most prominent cultural institutions in the state, known for its high-quality performances and commitment to community engagement. The Phoenix Symphony was founded by a group of local musicians who were passionate about bringing classical music to the people of Arizona. The orchestra's first concert was held on November 18, 1947, at Phoenix Union High School. The program included works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky, and was conducted by the orchestra's first music director, Guy Taylor. Over the years, the Phoenix Symphony has had a number of distinguished music directors, including Michael Christie, James Sedares, and Hermann Michael. Under their leadership, the orchestra has grown in size and reputation, and has become known for its innovative programming and commitment to new music. One of the highlights of the Phoenix Symphony's history was its performance at the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter in 1977. The orchestra was invited to perform at the ceremony, which was held on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The program included works by Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein, and was conducted by the orchestra's music director at the time, Eduardo Mata. In addition to its performances in the United States, the Phoenix Symphony has also toured internationally, performing in countries such as Mexico, Canada, and China. The orchestra has also collaborated with a number of prominent soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Lang Lang. One of the Phoenix Symphony's most notable achievements was the creation of the Arizona Commission on the Arts in 1967. The commission was established to promote the arts in Arizona, and has since become a model for other states across the country. In recent years, the Phoenix Symphony has continued to innovate and expand its reach. In 2014, the orchestra launched a new initiative called "Music and Wellness," which brings live music to hospitals and other healthcare facilities in the Phoenix area. The program has been widely praised for its ability to improve the well-being of patients and their families. The Phoenix Symphony has also been recognized for its commitment to education and community engagement. The orchestra's education programs reach more than 125,000 students each year, and include concerts, workshops, and other activities designed to introduce young people to classical music. In recognition of its achievements, the Phoenix Symphony has received numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2004, the orchestra was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists and arts organizations by the United States government. The Phoenix Symphony has also been recognized by the League of American Orchestras, the Arizona Governor's Arts Awards, and other organizations. Today, the Phoenix Symphony continues to be a vital part of the cultural landscape of Arizona.
