Tor Espen Aspaas is a Norwegian classical pianist and professor of music at the Norwegian Academy of Music. He was born on August 22, 1971, in Trondheim, Norway. Aspaas grew up in a musical family, with his father being a church organist and his mother a choir conductor. He began playing the piano at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Aspaas studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where he received his diploma in 1994. He then went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany, where he received his Konzertexamen in 1998. During his studies, Aspaas won several awards and competitions, including the Grieg Prize in 1993 and the Steinway Prize in 1994. Aspaas has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. He has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including violinist Henning Kraggerud, cellist Truls Mørk, and soprano Solveig Kringlebotn. Aspaas has also performed with several orchestras, including the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. One of Aspaas's most notable performances was his debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2001. He performed a program of works by Edvard Grieg, including the Piano Concerto in A minor. The performance was well-received by critics, who praised Aspaas's technical skill and musicality. Aspaas has also recorded several albums, including a complete recording of Grieg's piano music for the label Simax Classics. The recording received critical acclaim and was awarded the Spellemannprisen, the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammy Awards, in 2007. In addition to his performing career, Aspaas is also a respected music educator. He has been a professor of piano at the Norwegian Academy of Music since 2001 and has also taught at the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo.
