He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Thompson showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Thompson began his musical education at the age of five, studying piano with his mother. He quickly progressed and began taking lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires. Under her guidance, Thompson developed a deep understanding of classical music and honed his skills as a pianist. At the age of 12, Thompson made his debut as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. The performance was a huge success, and Thompson received critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing and musical maturity beyond his years. Over the next few years, Thompson continued to perform as a soloist with major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He also began to establish himself as a chamber musician, collaborating with some of the world's leading musicians, including violinist Joshua Bell and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In 2003, Thompson won the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, cementing his status as one of the world's leading pianists. The competition, held every four years, is one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world and has launched the careers of many of today's top pianists. Following his win at the Van Cliburn Competition, Thompson's career continued to flourish. He performed at major music festivals around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Ravinia Festival. He also recorded several critically acclaimed albums, including a complete cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas. In addition to his performing career, Thompson is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Conservatoire de Paris. He is known for his insightful and inspiring teaching style, and many of his students have gone on to successful careers as musicians.
