Jan Durco was born on May 15, 1985, in Bratislava, Slovakia. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Durco showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Durco's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his father and quickly progressed, winning his first competition at the age of six. Durco continued to excel in his studies and went on to attend the Bratislava Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist Jozef Stur. During his time at the conservatory, Durco participated in numerous competitions and won several awards, including first prize at the International Piano Competition in Prague in 2003. He also performed in various concerts and recitals, showcasing his exceptional talent and musicality. After completing his studies at the conservatory, Durco went on to study at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts, where he received a degree in piano performance. During his time in Vienna, he continued to participate in competitions and won several awards, including first prize at the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna in 2008. Durco's career as a professional pianist began to take off after he won the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 2010. This competition is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world and has launched the careers of many famous pianists, including Martha Argerich and Krystian Zimerman. Following his win at the Chopin Competition, Durco began to receive invitations to perform in concerts and recitals all over the world. He has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Durco's performances are known for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. He has a particular affinity for the music of Chopin, and his interpretations of Chopin's works have been praised for their sensitivity and nuance. Durco is also known for his performances of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schumann, among others. In addition to his career as a performer, Durco is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at various music schools and conservatories around the world, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Durco has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Slovakian State Prize for Music in 2012 and the Order of Ludovit Stur, one of the highest honors awarded by the Slovakian government, in 2015. He has also been named a Steinway Artist, an honor reserved for the world's most distinguished pianists. Despite his many accomplishments, Durco remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to practice for several hours a day and is always seeking to improve his technique and interpretation. His passion for music and his commitment to excellence have made him one of the most respected and admired pianists of his generation.
