Born in Washington D.C. in 1956, Walsh began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree with honors. After completing her studies, Walsh embarked on a career as a concert pianist, performing extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She quickly gained a reputation as a gifted performer with a deep understanding of the music she played. Her repertoire includes works by some of the greatest composers in the classical canon, including Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, and Schumann. One of the highlights of Walsh's career came in 1980, when she won the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition. This competition, which has been held annually since 1926, is one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world and has launched the careers of many of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Walsh's victory at the Naumburg competition was a testament to her exceptional talent and marked the beginning of a long and successful career. Over the years, Walsh has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
