Born in Glasgow in 1962, MacDougall grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. He attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he studied under the renowned tenor Kenneth Bowen. MacDougall's career as a performer began in the 1980s, when he joined the Scottish Opera as a chorus member. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by the early 1990s, he was performing lead roles in productions such as "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni." He also began to perform with other opera companies, including the English National Opera and the Welsh National Opera. In addition to his work in opera, MacDougall has also established himself as a concert performer. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and Carnegie Hall in New York. MacDougall's talent as a performer has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1994, he was awarded the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship, which is given to young singers who show exceptional promise. He has also been awarded the Scottish Music Award for Classical Music and the Critics' Award for Theatre in Scotland. In addition to his work as a performer, MacDougall is also a well-known broadcaster and presenter. He has presented many programs for BBC Radio Scotland, including "Classics Unwrapped" and "The Culture Studio." He has also presented programs for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4.
