The Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic is a classical music ensemble based in Hilversum, Netherlands. The orchestra was founded in 2005 as a merger between the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra. The ensemble is known for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. The Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1945 as part of the Dutch public broadcasting system. The orchestra quickly gained a reputation for excellence, performing regularly on radio and television broadcasts. Over the years, the orchestra has collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors and soloists, including Leonard Bernstein, Claudio Abbado, and Yo-Yo Ma. The Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1945 as well, with a focus on chamber music and smaller-scale works. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its virtuosity and versatility, performing a wide range of repertoire from Baroque to contemporary music. In 2005, the two ensembles merged to form the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic. The new ensemble was designed to combine the strengths of both orchestras, with a focus on innovative programming and contemporary music. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its adventurous programming, performing works by living composers alongside more traditional repertoire. One of the highlights of the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic's early years was its collaboration with composer Louis Andriessen. The ensemble premiered several of Andriessen's works, including his opera "La Commedia" and his "Mysterien" cycle. The ensemble also collaborated with other leading contemporary composers, including John Adams, Steve Reich, and Magnus Lindberg. In addition to its commitment to contemporary music, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic also performs a wide range of classical repertoire. The ensemble has a particular affinity for the music of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, and has performed many of their works to critical acclaim. Over the years, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic has won many awards and accolades for its performances. In 2010, the ensemble won the prestigious Edison Classical Music Award for its recording of Louis Andriessen's "La Commedia." The ensemble has also been nominated for several other Edison awards, as well as the BBC Music Magazine Award. One of the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic's most memorable performances was its 2011 concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The ensemble performed a program of contemporary music, including works by Louis Andriessen, Steve Reich, and John Adams. The concert was hailed as a triumph by critics and audiences alike, with many praising the ensemble's virtuosity and commitment to new music. In 2013, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic faced a major crisis when the Dutch government announced that it would be cutting funding for the ensemble. The decision was met with widespread protest from musicians and music lovers around the world, who argued that the ensemble was a vital part of the Dutch cultural landscape. Despite the funding cuts, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic has continued to perform and record at a high level. The ensemble has released several critically acclaimed recordings in recent years, including a recording of Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony and a collection of works by Dutch composer Willem Jeths.
