Torbianelli grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known composer and conductor. He began playing the piano at a young age and showed exceptional talent and passion for music. Torbianelli studied at the Milan Conservatory and later at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, where he specialized in early music and historical performance practice. He also studied with renowned pianists such as Maria Tipo and Murray Perahia. In 1992, Torbianelli won the prestigious International Harpsichord Competition in Bruges, Belgium, which launched his career as a soloist and chamber musician. He has since performed in major concert halls and festivals around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Lincoln Center in New York. Torbianelli is known for his virtuosic and expressive performances of both classical and contemporary repertoire. He has collaborated with many leading musicians and ensembles, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, and the Hilliard Ensemble. One of Torbianelli's most notable performances was his interpretation of Bach's Goldberg Variations, which he recorded in 2000. The recording received critical acclaim and was praised for its clarity, sensitivity, and technical brilliance. Torbianelli's interpretation of the Goldberg Variations has since become a benchmark for other pianists and harpsichordists. In addition to his performing career, Torbianelli is also a respected musicologist and teacher. He has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and the University of California, Berkeley. He has also published numerous articles and books on early music and performance practice. Torbianelli has received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the Diapason d'Or, the Gramophone Award, and the Echo Klassik Award. He was also awarded the prestigious Premio Abbiati by the Italian National Association of Music Critics in 2015. Despite his success, Torbianelli remains humble and dedicated to his craft.
