Orchestre Symphonique de Laval is a classical music ensemble based in Laval, Quebec, Canada. The orchestra was founded in 1984 by conductor and music director Alain Trudel, who remains at the helm of the ensemble to this day. The orchestra has grown in size and reputation over the years, becoming one of the most respected and beloved orchestras in Quebec. The founding of Orchestre Symphonique de Laval was a response to the growing demand for classical music in the Laval region. At the time, there were few opportunities for local musicians to perform in a professional setting, and there was a lack of cultural events in the area. Alain Trudel, who was then a young conductor and trombonist, saw an opportunity to create a new orchestra that would serve the community and provide a platform for local musicians to showcase their talents. Trudel assembled a group of musicians from the Laval area and began rehearsing for the orchestra's first concert. The inaugural performance took place on November 17, 1984, at the Collège Montmorency in Laval. The program included works by Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms, and was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience. Over the years, Orchestre Symphonique de Laval has grown in size and stature. The orchestra now boasts over 70 musicians, including some of the finest players in Quebec. The ensemble performs a wide range of repertoire, from classical masterpieces to contemporary works, and has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors. One of the highlights of Orchestre Symphonique de Laval's history was its performance at the 2010 Jeux de la Francophonie, a major international sporting and cultural event held in Beirut, Lebanon. The orchestra was invited to represent Canada at the event, and performed a program of Canadian and Quebecois music to a packed audience. The performance was a great success, and helped to raise the profile of the orchestra both at home and abroad. Orchestre Symphonique de Laval has also been recognized for its excellence with numerous awards and accolades. In 2007, the orchestra was awarded the Prix Opus for "Best Concert of the Year" for its performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2. The following year, the orchestra won the Prix Opus for "Best Concert of the Year - Regions" for its performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. These awards are a testament to the high level of musicianship and artistry that the orchestra brings to its performances. In addition to its regular concert series, Orchestre Symphonique de Laval is also committed to community outreach and education.
