Born on December 4, 1956, in Wilmington, Delaware, Bunnell grew up in a family that valued music. Her father was a church organist, and her mother was a choir director. Bunnell started singing in the church choir at a young age and developed a passion for music. Bunnell attended the University of Delaware, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance. She then went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she received a Master of Music degree. During her time at Curtis, Bunnell studied with renowned mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, who became her mentor and had a significant influence on her career. Bunnell made her professional debut in 1985 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where she played the role of the Second Lady in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." This performance marked the beginning of a long and successful career for Bunnell. She went on to perform in numerous productions at the Metropolitan Opera, including "Don Giovanni," "La Bohème," "Carmen," and "The Marriage of Figaro."
