Born on August 9, 1903, in Bucharest, Romania, Sebastian showed an early interest in music and began studying piano and composition at a young age. He later went on to study at the Bucharest Conservatory, where he received a degree in composition. Sebastian began his career as a conductor in 1926, when he was appointed as the conductor of the Bucharest Opera. He quickly gained a reputation for his skill and talent, and in 1930, he was invited to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. This was a major milestone in Sebastian's career, as it marked his debut with one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. Over the next few years, Sebastian continued to conduct orchestras throughout Europe, including the Vienna State Opera, the Paris Opera, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He also began to gain recognition as a composer, with several of his works being performed by orchestras throughout Europe. In 1940, Sebastian was appointed as the conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for six years. During his time with the orchestra, he helped to establish it as one of the leading orchestras in the world, and he conducted several historic performances, including the orchestra's first performance in Tel Aviv. In 1946, Sebastian was invited to conduct the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for two years. During his time with the orchestra, he conducted several notable performances, including the American premiere of Benjamin Britten's "Peter Grimes." Sebastian's career continued to flourish throughout the 1950s and 1960s, with him conducting orchestras throughout Europe and the United States. He also continued to compose, with several of his works being performed by orchestras around the world. One of the highlights of Sebastian's career came in 1964, when he was appointed as the conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This was a significant achievement, as the London Philharmonic Orchestra was one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world at the time. Sebastian held the position for five years, during which time he conducted several historic performances, including the orchestra's first performance at the Royal Festival Hall. Throughout his career, Sebastian received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1958, he was awarded the Order of the Star of Romania, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Romanian citizen. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1963, and the Order of the British Empire in 1968. Georges Sebastian passed away on January 17, 1969, at the age of 65.
