Under Mehta's leadership, the orchestra continued to perform at the highest level. It toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia, and it performed at major festivals such as the BBC Proms and the Lucerne Festival. The ensemble also recorded numerous albums, including acclaimed recordings of the music of Mahler, Bruckner, and Strauss. In 2016, Mehta retired from the Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie, and he was succeeded by conductor Kirill Petrenko. Petrenko is a Russian-born conductor who had previously worked with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Royal Opera House in London. He is known for his intense and passionate conducting style, and he has brought a new level of energy and excitement to the Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie. Under Petrenko's leadership, the orchestra has continued to perform at the highest level. It has toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia, and it has performed at major festivals such as the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival.
