In 2001, she won first prize in the Japan Classical Music Competition, and in 2003 she was awarded the prestigious Idemitsu Music Award. These early successes set the stage for Nagai's future career as a professional pianist. After completing her studies at Toho Gakuen, Nagai moved to the United States to continue her education at the Juilliard School in New York City. There, she studied under the renowned pianist Yoheved Kaplinsky and earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance.
