Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1949, Steuerman began his musical studies at a young age, showing a natural talent and passion for the piano. Steuerman's early training was under the guidance of his mother, who was a pianist herself. He later studied with renowned teachers such as Jacques Klein and Magda Tagliaferro, both of whom recognized his exceptional talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Steuerman's career as a concert pianist began in the 1970s, when he won several prestigious international competitions, including the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1970 and the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1972. These victories launched his career and established him as one of the leading pianists of his generation.
