He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Wahlgren showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Wahlgren's talent was quickly recognized, and he began studying at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm at the age of 16. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers in Sweden, including Gunnar Hallhagen and Hans Leygraf. During his time at the college, Wahlgren also studied composition and conducting. After completing his studies, Wahlgren began his career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation for his technical skill and musicality, and he was soon in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. Wahlgren performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, and he collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras in the world. One of the highlights of Wahlgren's career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Herbert von Karajan.
