New Light Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2015 in New York City. The orchestra is known for its innovative programming, which combines classical music with other genres such as jazz, world music, and electronic music. The ensemble is made up of some of the most talented young musicians in the city, many of whom have studied at prestigious music schools such as Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music. The idea for the orchestra came from its founder and artistic director, David Bloom. Bloom is a conductor and composer who has worked with some of the most renowned orchestras in the world, including the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. He wanted to create an ensemble that would bring classical music to a wider audience by presenting it in new and exciting ways. The orchestra's first concert took place in 2015 at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City. The program included works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Stravinsky, as well as a new composition by Bloom. The concert was a success, and the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. One of the highlights of the orchestra's early years was its collaboration with the electronic music duo Matmos. The two groups performed together at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2016, combining classical instruments with electronic sounds to create a unique and mesmerizing performance. In 2017, the orchestra performed at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Mostly Mozart Festival. The program included works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn, as well as a new composition by Bloom. The concert was well-received by both audiences and critics, and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in the city. Another notable performance by the orchestra was its collaboration with the jazz pianist Vijay Iyer. The two groups performed together at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2018, combining classical music with jazz improvisation to create a dynamic and exciting performance. In addition to its performances, the orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades. In 2016, the ensemble was awarded a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, which helped to fund its performances and outreach programs. The orchestra has also been featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Today, the New Light Symphony Orchestra continues to push the boundaries of classical music, presenting innovative and exciting programs that appeal to a wide range of audiences. The ensemble is made up of some of the most talented young musicians in the city, and is led by the visionary conductor and composer David Bloom. With its commitment to excellence and innovation, the New Light Symphony Orchestra is sure to continue making waves in the classical music world for years to come.
