Holst Sinfonietta is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1994 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble takes its name from the English composer Gustav Holst, who is best known for his orchestral suite "The Planets." The founding members of Holst Sinfonietta were violinist David Juritz, cellist Tim Hugh, and pianist Alasdair Beatson. All three musicians had already established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians, and they were eager to explore the rich repertoire of chamber music for piano trio. Over the years, the ensemble has expanded to include other musicians, but the core trio of Juritz, Hugh, and Beatson has remained constant. They have been joined by a rotating cast of guest artists, including violist Lawrence Power, clarinetist Michael Collins, and horn player Richard Watkins. Holst Sinfonietta has performed extensively throughout the UK and Europe, and they have earned a reputation for their dynamic and engaging performances. They have appeared at major festivals such as the Edinburgh International Festival, the Bath International Music Festival, and the Cheltenham Music Festival. One of the highlights of Holst Sinfonietta's career was their performance at the BBC Proms in 2004. They were invited to perform as part of the "Proms Chamber Music" series, and they received critical acclaim for their performance of Beethoven's "Archduke" Trio. In addition to their live performances, Holst Sinfonietta has also recorded several albums. Their debut album, "The Piano Trios of Mendelssohn and Schumann," was released in 1997 and received widespread praise for its sensitive and nuanced performances. Holst Sinfonietta has also been recognized with several awards and honors. In 2001, they were awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Music Award, which is one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. They were also named "Ensemble of the Year" at the 2003 Classical Brit Awards. Despite their success, Holst Sinfonietta remains committed to exploring new repertoire and pushing the boundaries of chamber music. They continue to perform regularly and are widely regarded as one of the finest chamber ensembles in the UK.
