Role:EnsembleOrquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana (OCV) is a classical music orchestra based in Valencia, Spain. The orchestra was founded in 2006 by the Generalitat Valenciana, the regional government of Valencia, with the aim of promoting classical music in the region and beyond. The birth of OCV can be traced back to the early 2000s when the Generalitat Valenciana decided to build a new opera house in Valencia, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia. The construction of the opera house was part of a larger project to revitalize the city of Valencia and make it a cultural hub in Europe. To complement the new opera house, the Generalitat Valenciana decided to create a new orchestra that would be based in Valencia and perform at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia. The orchestra was named Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, which means Valencia Community Orchestra in English. The first conductor of OCV was Lorin Maazel, a renowned American conductor who had previously led orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera. Maazel was appointed as the artistic director of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia and the principal conductor of OCV in 2005. Under Maazel's leadership, OCV quickly established itself as one of the leading orchestras in Spain and Europe. The orchestra's repertoire included a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary, and it collaborated with some of the world's most renowned soloists and conductors. One of the highlights of OCV's early years was its performance of Wagner's Ring Cycle at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in 2007. The Ring Cycle is a series of four operas that are considered to be one of the greatest achievements in the history of opera. OCV's performance of the Ring Cycle was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, and it helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as a world-class ensemble. In addition to its performances at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, OCV also toured extensively throughout Spain and Europe. The orchestra performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In 2011, OCV received the National Music Prize, the highest honor for music in Spain. The prize recognized the orchestra's contribution to the promotion of classical music in Spain and its international reputation. In 2013, OCV appointed its second principal conductor, Omer Meir Wellber, an Israeli conductor who had previously led orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic and the Semperoper Dresden. Wellber continued the tradition of excellence established by Maazel and led OCV to new heights of artistic achievement. Under Wellber's leadership, OCV continued to perform a wide range of classical music, from the works of the great masters to contemporary compositions. The orchestra also collaborated with some of the most renowned soloists and conductors in the world, including Plácido Domingo, Zubin Mehta, and Daniel Barenboim. One of the highlights of OCV's recent years was its performance of Verdi's Aida at the Arena di Verona in Italy in 2018. The Arena di Verona is a Roman amphitheater that is one of the most iconic venues for opera in the world. OCV's performance of Aida at the Arena di Verona was a triumph, and it cemented the orchestra's reputation as one of the leading ensembles in Europe.More....
