The orchestra was founded in 1742 and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in the world. The orchestra was originally founded as the Court Opera Orchestra by Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The ensemble was made up of 24 musicians and was primarily used to perform operas at the Royal Court. Over time, the orchestra grew in size and reputation, and in 1842, it became the official orchestra of the Berlin State Opera. Throughout its history, the Orchester der Staatsoper Berlin has been led by many notable conductors, including Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler, and Herbert von Karajan. Today, the orchestra is led by General Music Director Daniel Barenboim, who has been with the ensemble since 1992. The orchestra is made up of approximately 130 musicians, including some of the most talented instrumentalists in the world.
