Artist Info
Role:EnsembleDivertimento Ensemble is a contemporary classical music ensemble based in Milan, Italy. The group was founded in 1977 by Sandro Gorli, who remains the artistic director to this day. Over the years, the ensemble has become one of the most respected and innovative groups in the world of contemporary classical music. The birth of Divertimento Ensemble can be traced back to the early 1970s, when Sandro Gorli was a student at the Milan Conservatory. At the time, he was studying composition and conducting, and he was deeply interested in the avant-garde music of the day. He began to assemble a group of like-minded musicians, and in 1977, he founded Divertimento Ensemble. From the beginning, the ensemble was dedicated to performing contemporary classical music, with a particular focus on new and experimental works. Over the years, the group has commissioned and premiered countless new pieces, and has worked with some of the most important composers of our time. One of the highlights of Divertimento Ensemble's early years was their collaboration with the composer Luciano Berio. In 1980, the ensemble premiered Berio's "Folk Songs," a cycle of arrangements of traditional folk songs from around the world. The piece was a huge success, and helped to establish Divertimento Ensemble as a major force in the world of contemporary classical music. In the years that followed, Divertimento Ensemble continued to push the boundaries of contemporary classical music. They worked with a wide range of composers, from established masters like Berio and György Ligeti to up-and-coming young composers. They also began to explore new forms of performance, incorporating elements of theater, dance, and multimedia into their concerts. One of the most notable examples of this was their 1992 production of "The Black Dahlia," a multimedia opera by the composer Tod Machover. The piece combined live music with video projections, and was a groundbreaking work that helped to establish Divertimento Ensemble as a leader in the field of multimedia performance. Over the years, Divertimento Ensemble has performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the world. They have appeared at the Venice Biennale, the Salzburg Festival, and the Berliner Festspiele, among many others. They have also collaborated with some of the most important musicians of our time, including the pianist Maurizio Pollini and the conductor Claudio Abbado. In addition to their performances, Divertimento Ensemble has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1995, they were awarded the Premio Abbiati, one of the most prestigious awards in the world of classical music. They have also been recognized with awards from the Italian Ministry of Culture, the City of Milan, and many other organizations. Today, Divertimento Ensemble remains one of the most important and innovative ensembles in the world of contemporary classical music. They continue to commission and premiere new works, and to explore new forms of performance. And with Sandro Gorli still at the helm, they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.More....
