Gardella began his musical studies at a young age, studying piano and composition with some of the best teachers in Italy. He showed great talent and dedication, and by the age of 16, he had already composed several works for piano and chamber ensembles. In 1920, Gardella moved to Milan to study at the Conservatory of Music, where he studied composition with Ildebrando Pizzetti and Gian Francesco Malipiero. During his time at the conservatory, Gardella composed several works, including his first opera, "La Fiera di San Giovanni," which was premiered in 1923. The opera was well-received, and it marked the beginning of Gardella's career as an opera composer. In the following years, Gardella composed several other operas, including "La Maschera," "La Città Morta," and "La Fiamma." His operas were known for their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and dramatic intensity. They were also praised for their innovative use of orchestration and vocal writing. He also received commissions from opera houses in other countries, including the Royal Opera House in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In addition to his operas, Gardella also composed several orchestral works, including symphonies, concertos, and tone poems. His orchestral works were known for their lush orchestration and expressive melodies. Some of his most famous orchestral works include "La Danza delle Ombre," "Il Canto del Mare," and "La Notte di San Lorenzo." Gardella was also a prolific composer of chamber music, and he wrote several works for string quartet, piano trio, and other chamber ensembles. His chamber music was known for its intricate counterpoint, expressive harmonies, and virtuosic writing. Throughout his career, Gardella was recognized as one of the leading composers of his time. He received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Gold Medal of the City of Milan. He was also a member of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, one of the most prestigious musical institutions in Italy.
