Matteo Franceschini was born on May 22, 1979, in Milan, Italy. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a singer. From a young age, Franceschini showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study composition at the Conservatory of Milan, where he was mentored by renowned composer Azio Corghi. Franceschini's early works were heavily influenced by the music of the 20th century, particularly the works of Stravinsky, Bartok, and Ligeti. His compositions were characterized by complex rhythms, dissonant harmonies, and unconventional instrumentation. Despite the avant-garde nature of his music, Franceschini's works were well-received by audiences and critics alike. One of Franceschini's early works, "Quartetto per archi" (String Quartet), was premiered in 2002 by the Arditti Quartet. The piece was praised for its intricate textures and innovative use of extended techniques. Franceschini's "Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra" (Piano Concerto) was also well-received, with critics noting its virtuosic piano writing and inventive orchestration. In 2005, Franceschini was awarded the prestigious Gaudeamus Prize for his composition "Ritorno al nulla" (Return to Nothingness). The piece, which was inspired by the writings of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, was described as a "powerful and haunting work" by the jury. Franceschini's music continued to evolve throughout the 2000s, with his later works incorporating elements of minimalism and post-minimalism. His "Quartetto per archi n.2" (String Quartet No. 2), which was premiered in 2010, was noted for its use of repetitive patterns and gradual harmonic shifts. In 2012, Franceschini was commissioned by the Venice Biennale to compose a new work for the festival. The resulting piece, "L'angelo necessario" (The Necessary Angel), was a multimedia work that combined music, dance, and video projections. The piece was performed by the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Compagnia Virgilio Sieni, and was praised for its innovative use of technology and its exploration of the relationship between music and movement. Franceschini's most recent works have continued to push the boundaries of contemporary classical music. His "Concerto per violino e orchestra" (Violin Concerto), which was premiered in 2018, was noted for its use of microtonal intervals and unconventional tuning systems. The piece was performed by violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Franceschini's music has been performed by some of the world's leading ensembles and orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize and the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. In addition to his work as a composer, Franceschini is also a respected music educator. He has taught composition at the Conservatory of Milan and the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, and has served as a guest lecturer at universities around the world. Overall, Matteo Franceschini is a composer who has made significant contributions to the world of contemporary classical music. His innovative and boundary-pushing works have earned him a reputation as one of the most exciting composers of his generation, and his music continues to inspire and challenge audiences around the world.
