He was born on August 15, 1942, in San Francisco, California, and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, which exposed him to different genres of music from a young age. Marsh started playing the drums at the age of 12 and quickly developed a love for jazz music. He attended San Francisco State University, where he studied music and played in various jazz bands. After graduating, he began his career as a professional musician, playing in jazz clubs and recording studios. In the early 1970s, Marsh became interested in classical music and started studying with renowned percussionist William Kraft. He also studied with other notable percussionists, including John Bergamo and Michael Udow. Marsh's dedication to his craft paid off, and he soon became a sought-after percussionist in the classical music world. One of Marsh's most significant achievements was his work with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He joined the orchestra in 1972 and played with them for over 30 years. During his time with the orchestra, he performed in countless concerts and recordings, including the Grammy Award-winning recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 8. Marsh was also a member of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, a group dedicated to performing contemporary classical music. He played with the group for over 20 years and was known for his ability to play complex and challenging percussion parts. In addition to his work with orchestras and ensembles, Marsh was also a respected educator. He taught percussion at San Francisco State University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he mentored many young musicians who went on to have successful careers in music. Throughout his career, Marsh received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of music. In 1999, he was awarded the San Francisco Symphony's Outstanding Musician Award, which recognized his exceptional talent and dedication to the orchestra. He was also a recipient of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Award for his contributions to contemporary classical music.
