The choir was founded in 1979 by Dr. Timothy Mount, who served as the choir's artistic director until 2019. The choir is based in Columbus, Ohio, and is made up of approximately 40 auditioned singers. In 1995, they were awarded the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence by Chorus America. They have also been recognized by the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council for their contributions to the arts in Ohio. One of the choir's most significant accomplishments was their performance of the complete choral works of Johannes Brahms. This project took place over the course of several years and included performances of all of Brahms' choral works, including his major choral works such as the German Requiem and the Liebeslieder Waltzes. The project culminated in a recording of all of Brahms' choral works, which was released in 2001. In addition to their performances and recordings, Pro Musica Chamber Choir is also committed to music education and outreach.
