Born on February 24, 1954, in Kankakee, Illinois, Kunde grew up in a musical family and began singing in church choirs at a young age. He attended Illinois State University, where he studied voice and music education, and later earned a master's degree in vocal performance from the University of Illinois. Kunde's professional career began in the early 1980s, when he joined the chorus of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He made his solo debut with the company in 1984, singing the role of the Messenger in Verdi's Aida. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and dramatic presence, and began to receive offers from other major opera companies. In 1986, Kunde made his European debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, singing the role of the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto. He went on to perform at many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Paris Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. Kunde's repertoire is wide-ranging, but he is particularly known for his interpretations of the bel canto operas of Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini. He has sung many of the leading roles in these operas, including Count Almaviva in Rossini's The Barber of Seville, Edgardo in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, and Arturo in Bellini's I Puritani. One of Kunde's most notable performances came in 1997, when he sang the role of Arnold in Rossini's Guillaume Tell at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Italy. The performance was a triumph for Kunde, who received a 15-minute standing ovation from the audience. He went on to perform the role at the Royal Opera House in London, where he received similar acclaim. Kunde has also been recognized for his performances in the operas of Verdi. He has sung the roles of the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, Alfredo in La Traviata, and Radames in Aida, among others. In 2013, he received the Premio Abbiati, one of Italy's most prestigious music awards, for his performance as Otello in Verdi's opera of the same name. In addition to his work in opera, Kunde has also performed in concert and recital. He has sung with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also given recitals at major venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Wigmore Hall in London. Throughout his career, Kunde has received numerous awards and honors. In 1995, he was named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, in recognition of his contributions to the arts. He has also received the Richard Tucker Award, one of the most prestigious awards for American opera singers, and the Opera News Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in the field of opera. Despite his many accomplishments, Kunde remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform regularly, and is known for his tireless work ethic and commitment to his roles. He has also become a mentor to many young singers, and is passionate about passing on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of performers.
